Discover what makes things work! Imagine and create Kinetic sculptures and mechanical toys that will be brought to life with gears, cranks, levers, push-rods and cams. In 1913, Marcel Duchamp mounted a spinning bicycle wheel onto a stool to make what is considered the first kinetic sculpture. The wheel first needed to be turned by hand, but later experiments incorporated pulleys and motors to create motion. In this class, students will use simple mechanisms to make objects move up and down, turn around, or jump back and forth. Kinetic sculptures are so fun to build and play with that students won’t realize they are learning basic design principles and physics! Students will have take-home projects.
